Retro-Chic for your Home

I’d like to share a very interesting Interior style that is very bold yet brilliant! A style that is a classic from the '50's ‘60’s and ‘70’s…..*Drum Rolls*.....
THE RETRO-CHIC-STYLE
Actually anything older than the current period translates to retro but these years in particular were famous for a being bold and sometimes bizarre in all things design and style!

Retro style is an eclectic mix of old styles and new forms, or new forms with old materials and finishes.
You could mix the retro style with ‘vintage’ pieces or mix it with contemporary furniture for your own eclectic style!
Interior design magazines often show retro style as an interior decoration of mixed styles and objects from the past, second-hand and new. For example, 1970s patterned wallpapers, combined with second-hand furniture from the 1960s and 1950s - the Pop Art style. This décor style encompasses colors and styles of ‘psychedelic intensity’ in equally bold patterns of flowers, stripes, geometric and abstract designs.
In the 1960’s they were very popularly used on wallpapers, shaggy carpets, curtains, sofas, ottomans, cushions etc. The colors and patterns were influenced by India, Spain and the Mediterrranean.
Prominent colors that form a mélange for the retro look include dark greens, mustard yellows, hot pinks and various shades of orange. Combinations in black, white and red also form part of the retro theme.
Basically, this is a very bold style that requires a certain ‘personality’ or flamboyance to pull it off!

You may think of doing a particular room in this theme if you don’t think you can carry it off for the entire house. Teens bedrooms, Entertainment dens and Master bedrooms can look fabulous with this style of decorating!
And now folks, you are in for some eye-popping treats…..lets groove it shall we!

Some retro-polka fun for your home?

Dynamic, vibrant, quirky and unique. Retro style is one that you can love or hate but hard to ignore! Going all out retro is for the boldly flamboyant but one can always play around with retro elements in measured amounts to create that stunning look!

I think the 70's is an era we should all forget - clothing and decor included! I know a lot of people love retro furniture - especially the 1950's but I have never seen the appeal. The 1970's always makes me think of the Brady Bunch and orange furniture and brick interior walls! Leanne @ cresting the hill

That groovy teen room looks super duper cool!
But can this retro chic be applied to only one room, or does it have to match with the decor of the whole house?
P.S. There's 'retro' in my post too :D

Retro is too much for my senses.. I like muted shades and colors. But I loved the images above.

I really like how bold a statement you can make with retro chic.. but personally I like it in smaller elements.. like crockery.. or smaller art pieces..
Great ideas

the retro look is quite cool! Ah! the colours and the flow! I think if I had to make a retro corner, I'd do my reading room in this fashion, it looks laid back, unhurried and calming. hmm.food for thought and the wallet! :)

Brilliant post, literally and otherwise! :) Edgy charm to the retro concept! Loved the images, though am too much of a coward to go the whole hog with retro at home. Would totally dig it in a washroom or as accent pieces - the wall art, the lampshades and the cushions are just genius!

I'm not a great fan of retro in interiors. Too busy for me. I'd love it to be in a restaurant or even in somebody else's home. I did like the aesthetic of the retro kitchen though.

Hey Kala, what a wonderful post with such lovely ideas, I like few of them a lot like teen room and classic retro colours with print blending...my favorites. Thanks for sharing. I'll definitely try to give it a shot once I'll design my own house.
