You've got Mail

Hello young lady,

Yes, I am certainly addressing you! A few grey hair (okay many), aching limbs and you think you qualify as old? Pshaw...what rubbish! The action's just begun, wait till you get here! You are wondering who I am? I am your time-traveling future self. They have rules that bar the past-present-future selves coming face to face but they aren't too strict about this kind of communication. I had Siri take down this mail, she is so annoying, you won't believe it...prompting this, checking my pronunciation, damn assistant. How I miss writing on a writing pad, you still have those, I believe?

I've been observing you over the last couple of years and frankly I am fed up of your constant complaints. Oh, yes, I've been keeping a watch on you, not much to do with my time at this age. You don't know what I am talking about? I have a complete list of what you crib about...now where did that darn assistant save that list! Aha, here it is. Here goes:

How you have no time for yourself.
How your husband isn't as romantic as he used to be.
How everyone wants everything on time and no one cares how hard you work to get that done or how well you do it.
How you are the only person who knows where everything from the safety-pin, to the football to the ironing board is kept.
How no one compliments you on the timely, tasty food you cook but complain when something is amiss.
How difficult it is to stay calm and patient with growing children and ageing parents.
How aggravating it is to have to listen to friends boast about their accomplishments or their children's.
How you aren't as light-footed as you used to be.
How tiring it is to go through the same routine day in and day out.

My, my, you sure have a long list of complaints.
Well, my dear I cannot take away your problems but I can make them seem trivial.
You know how? I'll share my current status:

I have all the time in the world, all by myself and nothing to do.
My husband is no longer in this world and all I have are fond memories.
I wish I could make something for someone, wish I could work so hard and be so tired that I would sleep soundly.
I don't remember where I kept what, sometimes I forget my children's names.
I cannot cook now and when I eat tasty food, I remember to be thankful and compliment the cook.
My children have long flown the nest and my parents are no more.
Friends only talk of their ailments or the neglect their children treat them to.
I have a full-time nurse who transports me around the elderly-care home on a wheel-chair.
I know I don't have much time left. I am just glad to make it through each day and thankful for having made it to the night.

Now tell me, what do you think?
Don't you feel better about the time and space you are in? Aren't you happy to be busy, healthy, wanted and surrounded by all your loved ones?
Your life may not be perfect, but  believe that it is the best time of your life and it will be.
Are you wondering if I'll be back with more such mails? Sadly, everyone gets just one chance at this kind of communication. I chose mine on my last day in this world. So you won't be hearing again from me but I'll always be watching you, as your conscience.

Love always,

Your older self.

That will be all Siri.

This is very thought provoking Kala, I really feel I am in the best phase of life at present. Just to think of the state you have explained is hair raising. I think this is going to daunt me every time I complain. No more complaints kala
This was so soulful. Like literally an eye opener! What a wonderful piece to start the day. I am NOT going to crib today ( hopefully ever) thanks to this piece. In a few words you gave a life lesson. We should be just sooo grateful for things we have! :) beautifully written Kala :) have a great day! Hugs
A perfect reminder, for us to stop cribbing and start living. 👍
Your older self is so wise... It actually made me think too. I keep lamenting about getting old but it's not as bad as it will be when I get older . Living in the present is what makes up our life.
Your older self is indeed very wise. I'm not quite sure if my older self will be so, but I hope so. And if he says I crib too much, he may be right. Though I do try to live more in the moment than people think. :-) Loved the letter, and the tone of the older self. Way to go, KRS!
wow Kala- this is really mind blowing. It reminds me to be grateful for t=my current life- the place I am now in is just perfect despite all the complaints and misgivings. I have been feeling good about it since the past few months, despite the busy maddening days- I would rather not have it any other way
Thanks to your older self for writing this letter to you and thanks to you for putting it up here for us to read and contemplate. Indeed, this is the best time of our lives, at whatever juncture we are. We still are healthy. We still have children around us. These are reasons enough to rejoice.
This was an eye -opener Kala and I was stunned for a moment dear but in second thought how true. I liked the Siri Angle too a lot.
Present is for living it up Kala; with as few regrets and guilt as possible. Worry about all that when you have all the time in the world to sit in a rocking chair and mull over it then!!
How true every word rings...I couldn't agree with your future self more, Kala. I've been thinking a lot about how life will be in the years to come after seeing what our parents are going through right now and this seems scarily accurate! On second thoughts, I think it's a nice feeling to know we still have some time left to make the most of what we have with us right now. Let's live it to our best!!!
Really, time to count blessings and stop cringing on things which are not worth!
Your life may not be perfect, but believe that it is the best time of your life and it will be.This belief comes with wisdom. If it comes earlier( like you have realized)you will live a happy life.Loved the twist on the prompt,
This is a thought provoking. While reading this, I was thinking what if we get such a leter from our future for real? Maybe we all would stop complaining and living a bit more gratefully.
This is so thought-provoking. We take things for granted and dont value the things we have. And as you mentioned life is never perfect but we need to make the most of it, NOW.
We must always count our blessings, Kala. Thanks for the excellent reminder.
What a lovely letter Kala. I enjoyed reading this one and got me thinking.
Wise letter....A reminder to count our blessings :)

How absolutely true Kala . We're often so busy grumbling that we forget to appreciate what we have . Thanks for this wonderful reminder of how blessed we are to have the lives that we do .
Your older self is full of wisdom. We have one life and to live it well should be the moto.
Absolutely true. Being able to value what we have when we have it is very important! Loved the write up :)
Beautifully expressed and a great reminder to enjoy every moment of life. Will try and remember not to ignore or get irritated by the little people of the house and with the mess they make. I know I will miss them when they 'fly the nest'
